SIMPLE stands for Session initiation protocol for Instant Messaging and Presence Leveraging Extensions. SIMPLE is defined by IETF and uses another IETF protocol, SIP as a core. SIMPLE is an open standard which allows development of interoperable Presence and Instant messaging applications. SIMPLE protocol functionality is based on the number of SIP extensions and can be split into the following:

  • Presence, which includes:
    • Core protocol machinery, comprised of SIP extensions for subscriptions, notifications and publications, utilizing SUBSCRIBE, NOTIFY and PUBLISH methods to communicate between Presence User Agents (PUA) themselves and PUA to the Presence Server.
    • Presence documents, defined in XML format. Protocol called XML Document Management (XDM) defined by the OMA, supports access and manipulation of XML documents across the networks.
    • Privacy, policy and provisioning, which allows to inform Presence servers of rules and preferences of the PUA. XCAP protocol (XML Configuration Access Protocol) allows PUA to communication it's preferences to the XCAP servers.
  • IM - two modes can be used in SIP:
    • Page Mode, which is based on usage of the SIP MESSAGE method, allows to exchange instant messages without establishing session.
    • Session Mode is based on usage of the MSRP protocol for exchanging the content of arbitrary size ( text or files), once the session is established using SIP and SDP.
