Stream Control Transmission Protocol (SCTP) is a transmission layer, such asTCP or UDP.

SCTP is a connection-oriented protocol (such as TCP), that deals with datagrams (such as UDP) rather than byte streams (such as TCP).

Unlike TCP, SCTP provides a number of functions thatare critical for telephony reliable signaling transport over a packet network.

Some of the highlights of SCTP are:

  • Simultaneous multi-stream control
  • Multi-homing sessions (many IP addresses for one host)
  • Improved error handling
  • Improved security considerations

Many carrier grade vendors require for SCTP to transport SIP/SS7 tunneled inSIP.

SCTP is defined by the IETF in RFC 2960.
