A term used to describe the variation in packet delay. In packet switch applications, where data is carrying over network packets, there is a variance in the packet arrival timing. In order to overcome this variance and to provide a smooth usage of the received packets, a delay buffer is added to the system. In most cases, the buffer size is being determined by the max introduced variance.
