The Telecommunication Standardization Sector, which is responsible for the coordination of standards for the telecommunications industry on behalf of the International Telecommunication Union (ITU), was re-named ITU-T in 1993.

Based in Geneva, Switzerland, The ITU-T mission is to ensure an efficient and timely production of worldwide standards for all telecommunication fields. Standards produced by ITU-T are called “Recommendations”. Such standards include The G.7XX audio codec series, JPEG and MPEG video codecs, H.323, etc.
