Forward Error Correction (FEC) is a type of correction code, which allows the receiver to compensate for loss packets without requiring any information to be sent in real-time by the sender.

According to the FEC mechanism, the sender of the media stream sends redundant data as part of the stream. This redundant data allows the receiver of the media stream to reconstruct lost packets, up to a certain level, by applying a certain algorithm on the redundant and media data.

The most basic form of FEC for VoIP is defined in RFC 2733. It has later been updated with the introduction of RFC 5109.
