AEC (Acoustic Echo Cancellation)
Last update: Jun 03, 2010Acoustic echo is caused by direct and indirect feedback from the speaker(s) to the microphone(s). An Acoustic Echo Canceller electronically removes both the direct coupling and the reflected echo, enabling true full-duplex hands-free telephony for both mobile phones and desktop speakerphones.
There are many AEC algorithms to choose from and they are different from each other in the bandwidth range in which they work with and the types of assumptions they make over the sound that they need to filter. Put simply, an echo canceller for a mobile handset is different from one for a high end video conference room system.
A few other related term you might hear when discussing AEC are residual echo, full duplex performance, audio cutoff, echo break and noise injection.
